During the surfing months of November - March the beaches along The Sunset Coast
can be a little rough for swimming on some days when the surf is up... but in
the rest of the year its great for swimming and snorkeling. Puntas - The
Fun Coast is a great mix of surfing, swimming and lots of beach activity all
year long!

we've organized our accommodations, restaurants and other listings
by their location within the town of Rincón. You'll want to explore

Surf Shops & Surfing Lessons:
Rincon has been known for the best surfing in the Caribbean for years. The
surfing season only runs from November to March - so you'll want to make sure
and visit when the surf's
up. Surfing breaks are located off the beaches of Puntas - The Fun Coast,
the point where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean and our Sunset Coast. This is
the time of year when you'll watch world-class surfers challenge some of the
most amazing waves you'll ever see. In the summer months, the surf calms
down but you'll still find some smaller surfing waves depending on weather and
ocean conditions.
Even if you don't want to 'hang ten' with
the experienced surfers, you'll want to enjoy the action from the beach or
at the Lighthouse Park. You'll
quickly see why experienced surfers call Puerto Rico 'The Maui of the
Caribbean'.
If you want to learn how to surf - don't
be intimidated by the huge waves at Domes, Marias or Tres Palmas. There are lots
of places where the waves are just right for beginners and intermediate surfers.
If you already know how to ride the waves - you can rent surfboards and body
board from the surf shops listed below.
The 1968 World Surfing Championship and
2007 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship were held in Rincon and there are

Snorkel & Water Sports: During the summer months,
the surf along our coast calms down and becomes a great place for snorkeling
just offshore. The Tres Palmas Marine Reserve at Steps Beach is especially good
- but you'll find great snorkeling all along
the Rincon beaches. The reefs at Tres Palmas Marine Reserve have extensive beds
of Elkhorn Coral which is a threatened species. Like any Marine Reserve,
make sure you don't touch the coral (it can be very sharp) or break coral
formations with your flippers. Taking souvenirs of the coral is prohibited by
Puerto Rico and Federal Law.
During surfing season from November to March - it is
better to check with the dive shops and arrange a
snorkel trip to some of the calmer offshore reefs or on Desecheo Island which is 12 miles offshore.
Dive Shops also have snorkel equipment for sale or
rent.
